The Sportster is true American bobber material. But that hasn’t stopped many builders from creating a Harley cafe racer—notably Deus (see top image), Roland Sands and DP Customs. Even Harley themselves made the XLCR 1000 in 1977, which is now a real collector’s item. There are positives. The Sportster cafe racer you see here was built for a customer. Based on a rubber-mount 2005 XL1200, the build has a decidedly elegant, almost European look. Yone imported parts from England, Italy, and the USA, while molding and developing other elements on his own, such as the tail cowl. His intention was to give the bike a lean, level. The tank, oil tank and seat base are handmade from aluminium to reduce the weight and to ensure the best fit to the frame. The front end is from a Yam R6 to get the best ride height with good braking and damping, the rear is a 18 inch rear wheel with 4 pot brakes. As a proper cafe racer it is running clip ons with rear sets. I loved the clean, compact, elegant lines of Cafe Racer styled bikes so that’s where I started.
